Bridal Bouquets | The Language of Flowers & Wedding Inspiration
Did you know the Victorians created an entire language of flowers called floriography? They used carefully chosen blooms to send secret messages — a meaningful way to express emotions without saying a word. I’ve always loved that idea, especially because I spend so much time photographing wedding flowers.
Today, I’m sharing a few of the wedding bouquets I’ve photographed over the years. I don’t think the florists were hiding secret meanings in these gorgeous arrangements (although that would be fun!), but the symbolism behind each flower always fascinates me. Every bouquet shows a little of the bride’s personality — her favourite colours, the style she loves, and the emotions she wants to carry into her wedding day.
Here’s another lovely piece of history: the ancient Greeks used flowers in their wedding celebrations long before anyone else. They believed blooms were gifts from nature that brought blessings to the couple. Bridesmaids gathered the flowers, tied the bouquets, and made tiny poesies (little nosegays) for guests as a gesture of thanks. I adore the thought behind that.
Flowers have always played a part in love stories. They bring beauty, colour and meaning to moments we want to remember.
If you’re getting married in Oundle, Northamptonshire, or the nearby villages, and you’re still searching for a florist, we have some truly talented local floral artists. Their creativity never fails to inspire me, and I always enjoy photographing their work:
